Truth or Dare

Several years ago, back in the good 'ol days, when a quick workout in a sports gym wouldn't potentially kill you, I was at the gym, on a stair master, across from a person who spent their entire time texting on the treadmill.

They had the pace and sound of someone wearing flip-flops.

I remember thinking, they were just walking in place. As I took my attention off of that person I noticed another person on the Jacob's Ladder like they were training to be in a Marvel movie. I mean they were gettin' it! I immediately thought, "we're just all walking in place." We were all on stationary machines so we weren't actually going anywhere yet each of us had a different level of intensity that felt aligned with a corresponding sense of accomplishment.

And that's what had me transfixed on the person on the treadmill. I can't speak to their sense of accomplishment, but their pace was so slow that, unlike me and the person on the Jacob's Ladder, they didn't need to bend their knees to move their body. It was almost like everything was moving around them. I imagined them standing at the bottom of a staircase never lifting their foot to move forward.

On that day, I realized something about myself; I'm the sort of person who's easily annoyed by people dragging their feet. It's the zero energy that doesn't sit right with me. It was giving zombie with a cellphone.

I get this pet peeve honestly.

47 years ago, on this day, the only day of the year to challenge one to move forward, I was born. I honestly believe this fated me to constantly rise up, lift my feet, and move forward. I was literally born into this way of walking the earth.

That’s my daily dare, to March first. To meet each moment anew; to live in my full truth. Every day I dare myself to meet that challenge, and every time I do I am born again and again and again.

The people who live the most are the ones who die daily.
